Personally I found NFS: Rivals and Need for Speed (2015) better games. It's certainly not bad and it does a lot very well, it just fails to impress in many aspects. Overall I found Payback to be an average game. I can't really comment on the difficulty as the game allows a choice of easy, normal or hard for everything from the beginning so if you prefer an easier time or like a challenge you can decide for yourself. I would say the other event types are much better though, especially the drift events.īy the time the story mode is finished there is still a huge amount left to do including tracking down collectibles and many other activites, but whether or not you'll have interest in them after 30 or so hours is likely to depend on how badly you want the completion rather than enjoyment. I won these only after several tries and a bit of luck. The cars spin out and crash like crazy and I found myself spending as much time each race crashing into trees and flying off canyon ridges as I did on the track. The worst part about the racing is to be found in the offroad events which are basically Need for Speed meets Dirt Rally. Need for Speed Payback is one step forwards and two steps back for EA's 23-year- old racing series.Check out more of the latest racing game reviews:Gran Turi. The races towards the end of the story mode caused some frustation due to unneccesary durations, repetition and wild AI behaviour. With the story out the way let me talk about the gameplay which is for the most part, very good.

It's a very long story mode by the way which plays out like a 20 hour unenjoyable popcorn movie if you follow it. This caused me to skip all the cut-scenes and mute the sound so I could focus on the actual racing. Not only are the characters in this game unpleasant to look at but the constant yapping and non-stop wise-cracking becomes very annoying after about the first 20 minutes and they never shut up for the duration of the game. The characters look quite basic and ugly and it's really a huge step back from the impressive acting scenes we saw in Need for Speed (2015). Unfortunately, the story and characters in this game are rather terrible even by Need for Speed standards. The Fast & the Furious movies + Forza Horizon + Need for Speed = Payback. It's an undeniably great looking game.įrom the first few minutes playing the game it's very clear what the game is.

The open world of Fortune City looks absolutely spectacular, as do the cars and generally everything the game has to offer. Much like Need for Speed (2015) I found Payback to be a mixture of both greatness and disappointment.
